Abstract Erythropoietin (EPO), a sialic acid-containing acid glycoprotein, is a human endogenous physiologically active substance. According to the traditional view, EPO promotes the reproduction, differentiation and maturation of advanced erythroid progenitor cells. In recent years, more and more studies have shown that EPO has neuroprotective effects. Its mechanism may include inhibition of inflammatory reaction and edema, anti-apoptosis, inhibition of the toxic effects of excitatory amino acids, nutritional nerves and the like. According to the source, it can be divided into endogenous and exogenous EPO. Animal experiments have shown that exogenous EPO can pass through the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and thus play a neuroprotective effect in the brain. In this review, we reviewed the progress of EPO in the mechanism of cerebral protection after intracerebral hemorrhage.
