Abstract Objective To assess autonomic nerve function in patients with orthostatic hypotension (OH) after cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) by evaluating the level of urinary vanillylmandelic acid (VMA). Methods The level of 24 hours urinary VMA was determinated in 15 patients with OH after cervical SCI and 17 patients without OH by high-performance liquid chromatography. The results were statistically analyzed according to t-test analysis. Results The urinary VMA concentrations in persons with OH after cervical lesions were markedly reduced compared to patients without OH after cervical SCI [(12.4±3.27)μmol/24 h vs. (34.5±9.41)μmol/24 h, P<0.05]. Conclusion The level of 24 h urinary VMA could have the potential to assess the autonomic nerve function in patients post SCI.
