Abstract Central venous pressure (CVP) has long been widely used as a classic indicator of cardiovascular system filling pressure. However, in recent years, a large number of studies have questioned the reliability of CVP in assessing patient's preload and fluid responsiveness. This paper has summarized and reconsidered the current controversy and future possible value in clinical application of CVP according to its formation mechanism, influencing factors and recent research progress.
