Clinical study of Traditional Chinese medicine anti-inflammatory mixture on protection of organ function of patients with sepsis in Intensive Care Unit |

Abstract Objective: To observe the protection of Traditional Chinese medicine anti-inflammatory mixture on organ functions of severe sepsis in intensive care unit(ICU). Methods: Seventy-three patients with severe sepsis were randomly divided into two groups: anti-inflammatory mixture-treated group(40 cases)and control group(33 cases). Routine medicine therapy was given in both groups. Additionally, in the anti-inflammatory mixture-treated group, 100 mL anti-inflammatory mixture was given by oral or nasal feeding, every 12 hours for consecutive 7 days. Infection index, pro-inflammatory cytokines, blood coagulation index, glasgow coma score(GCS), myocardial injury index, oxygenation index, liver function, renal function, gastrointestinal function score before and after therapy were collected. Results: Infection index, pro-inflammatory cytokines rose,blood coagulation time extended, GCS, heart function, lung function, liver function, kidney function and gastrointestinal function score of the 73 cases was damaged before therapy in different degrees. The above indicators of two groups of patients were improved to varying degrees after therapy of 7 days. Oxygenation index and serum anti-inflammatory cytokines(interleukin-10, transforming growth factor-β)in the anti-inflammatory mixture-treated group was significantly higher compared with the control group, yet infection index(WBC, PCT, LPS), pro-inflammatory cytokines(TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6), myocardial injury index(cTnI, CK-MB, BNP), liver function(TBIL, ALT), renal function(SCr)and gastrointestinal function score of the anti-inflammatory mixture-treated group significantly decreased compared with the control group(P<0.05). Blood coagulation index(PT, APTT)was significantly shorter compared with the control group(P<0.05). Conclusion: On the basis of comprehensive treatment of western medicine, Chinese and western medicine treatment of adding the anti-inflammatory mixture of Chinese herbal medicine can effectively inhibit infection-inflammation, coagulation-immunity network of sepsis patients and has an obvious protective effect on patients with severe sepsis with multiple organ damage.
